Why there are no streaks in Kintsugi
A streak counter is the most reliable engagement mechanic anyone has found. It is cheap to build, it measurably increases how often people come back, and every app you use has one. We are not building one, and it is worth setting out why rather than just claiming the high ground.
What a streak actually does
It converts your history into a single number that only ever goes up, and it makes that number destructible. The pull is loss aversion: you keep going not because today is worth doing, but because you cannot stand to watch a big number become zero.
For learning a language on the bus, that is a fair trade and nobody is much harmed by it. Point the same mechanic at an app where the tracked behaviour is staying off something, and it does something else entirely.
Where it turns
A person with 240 days behind them has one difficult night. The honest record says: 240 days, then a hard one, then whatever comes next. The streak counter says 0.
That number is a lie about what happened, and it is a lie told at the exact moment the person is least able to argue with it. Worse, it creates a reason not to log the truth, and an app that people quietly lie to is worse than no app, because now the record is wrong too.
The same shape shows up around food. A tracker that gives you a daily allowance and marks you red for exceeding it has built a restriction mechanic, whatever the marketing says, and for someone with a fraught relationship with eating that mechanic is not neutral.
What Kintsugi does instead
- Time is counted forward and never reset. A hard day is entered as a day, and every day in front of it stays in the record.
- No longest-run trophy, so there is nothing to lose and nothing to protect by not logging honestly.
- Nothing turns red, nothing counts down, no calorie allowance and no completion percentage.
- No notification whose job is to make you feel you are slipping.
The cost, stated plainly
Retention will be worse than it would be with streaks. We know that, and the trade is deliberate: an app in this category has to be safe to be honest with, and a mechanic that punishes honesty is not compatible with that, however well it performs.
If you have used something that made a bad week feel like a deleted save file, this is the app built by someone who thought that was a design failure rather than a personal one.
Kintsugi is not treatment, and not a crisis service
It is a set of tools for the ordinary work of a day. It does not diagnose anything, it does not replace a GP, a therapist or a support group, and it is not staffed. If you need someone now, the people who can help are listed on our support page.
